A Brief Introduction to Habitat for Humanity:

Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing organization. All people are welcome to join us as we build simple, decent, affordable houses in partnership with those who lack adequate shelter. Since 1976, Habitat has built more than 175, 000 houses, providing shelter for nearly 900,000 people worldwide. Now at work in 100 countries, we are building a house every 26 minutes. By 2005, Habitat houses will be sheltering 1 million people.

How Habitat Works:

Local Habitat affiliates (Broome County for the Binghamton area) coordinate house building and select partner families. Habitat houses are then purchased by the homeowner families. Three factors make the houses affordable to low-income people worldwide:

Houses are sold at no profit, with no interest charged on the mortgage
Homeowners and volunteers build the houses under trained supervision
Individuals, corporations, faith groups and others provide financial support

Homeowner families are chosen according to their need; their ability to repay the no-profit, no-interest mortgage; and their willingness to work in partnership with Habitat. Habitat for Humanity does not discriminate according to race, religion or ethnic group.

Our Campus Chapter:

The Binghamton University campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1995 by Wade Wilson. One of our main accomplishments to date was sponsoring a house on Munsell Street, which was built between 2000 and 2002. Our campus chapter has three main functions:

Building
o We build throughout the academic year in conjunction with Broome County HFH nearly every Saturday.
o We participate in the annual spring break collegiate challenge. Past trips have included: Louisiana, West Virginia, Florida, South Carolina and Hawaii
Fundraising
o The average cost of construction materials for a new Habitat home in Broome County is nearly $50,000. A vital part of our mission is to raise money to donate to Broome County to help cover the costs of the homes we help work on each week.
o Our largest fundraiser is the annual 5K race held towards the end of spring semester.
Educating
o 4,471 families in Broome County live below the poverty line
o Many of these families have inadequate housing
